I just came from seeing the new Michael Jackson movie, This Is It. It was quite a feast for the eyes. I inicially didn't want to go see it due to the fact that I thought I was going to break down every 7 minutes. I don't like getting emotional in public, much less at a movie theater. I thought to myself 'I need closure on all this' and went. I also wanted to support Michael's estate for his children. Needless to say, I only brokedown twice: During 'I'll be There' and the 'Man in the Mirror'.
I catched the 4:30 show. There weren't that many people. Good. Less people would see me cry. Most crowds really come in at 8:00 PM shows anyway. The film itself made 20 million the first day.
So the movie starts with 'Wanna be Startin' Something' which I thought was really cool. Got me bouncin' on my seat. I won't get into detail about the film because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but all and all it wasn't what I expected. It was better then I expected.
You saw Michael in complete control of the whole situation. The way he wanted a certain song to sound. The way the bass was suppose to sound. The way the dancer's were suppose to move. When to turn and how to turn. How the guitarist was suppose to move along with him. How a song needed to "simmer".....everything was all Michael Jackson. He had his magic finger's in everything. It pretty much sticks it to the idiots who run that awful This is NOT It campaign. Those folks, with their hysteria and ridiculous over the top "testimonials" couldn't have been proven more wrong. Michael proved them wrong. Granted, I am sure Michael had his days when he was fatigued and ill (he did suffer from Lupus) and I am sure he didn't attend rehearsals on those days. But I guess those idiotic 'Not' campaigner's wanted to see all that on film. They wanted to see what was the "truth" in their minds. I guess they find Michael gasping for air or vomiting more entertaining. That would be a great way to remember a genius. That pretty much tells you how selfish some fans are out there.
Kenny made a film for fans to remember what a great loss we had. I applaud him for focusing on what Michael loved the most: Music. For many years, due to scandal, witchhunts and media ridicule - people had forgotten what a brilliant artist this man really was. Singer, dancer, producer, composer, lyricist, innovator - Michael was all that and more.
It's a great fucking lost and this film will slap that across your face for two hours straight. How could we have treated this man so badly when he was alive? How could many have abandoned him? Accuse him of shit that weren't true? Ridiculed him? Yes, I'm looking at you mass media.
Watching this film will leave you with an ache in your chest from the pain of the lost of this wonderful creature. There will never be another one like him. And you know it too.
What I love the most is the ending. There was no "RIP". There was no "In Memory of". There was simply "Michael Jackson: Now and Forever". I loved that. I applaud Kenny for keeping it classy. This film could have gone all wrong in many way...But Kenny Kept it the way Michael would have wanted his fans to remember him: It's all about the music.
Thank you Kenny Ortega.
